X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) is an analytical technique used to determine the elements present in a sample. In museums and the field of art conservation, XRF has numerous applications including identification and analysis of the following objects:
- pigments in a painting or on polychrome sculpture
- image metals or toners in photographic prints
- metal sculpture
- illuminated manuscripts
- silver alloys
- heavy metal pesticides in ethnographic collections

- ceramics
